Christmas waste and recycling in the city

December 20, 2011

Recycle your Christmas tree

Bristol’s popular kerbside collection scheme for real Christmas trees is back in January, so once you’ve taken down the decorations, remember to put your tree out.

All residents with a food waste or garden waste collection can take advantage of this scheme, which runs from Tuesday 3rd until Thursday 19th January 2012. Make sure you’ve removed all the decorations, the pot and as much of the soil as possible first and then put it out on your usual collection date.

If you don’t have the kerbside collection, you can take your tree to Bristol Zoo Gardens’ north car park, between Friday 6th and Friday 20th January 2012, or to either of the council’s two household waste recycling centres any time throughout the year.

All the trees collected are taken for composting.

Love Food Hate Waste

Save yourself £££s and get the most out of your Christmas food by reusing your leftovers. Get recipe ideas at www.lovefoodhatewaste.com.

For any remaining leftovers such as vegetable peelings and turkey bones, make sure you use your brown food waste bin, so that the food can be taken away for composting instead of going to landfill.

Or start home composting, with a discounted deal on a home compost bin from the council. You can put all your fruit and vegetable peelings as well as garden waste, cardboard, straw and hay into your compost bin. Find out more at www.bristol.gov.uk/composting.

Recycle all that wrapping

If you can’t re-use your wrapping paper, then put it in your black box (as long as it’s paper and not plastic coated or foil).

And all your cardboard packaging, Christmas cards, glass bottles and jars can be recycled too.

For a full list of what can go in your black box, visit www.bristol.gov.uk/recycling.

Get rid of your old gadgets

Don’t just bin your old electrical gadgets – from games consoles to mobile phones, hairdryers to TVs, they can all be taken to one of the council’s two Household Waste Recycling Centres in Days Road, St Philips and Kingsweston Lane, Avonmouth. The gadgets are stripped down, with all possible parts being recycled and the hazardous chemicals disposed of.

Bank holiday collection day changes

Remember that there are likely to be changes to your collection days during the festive period, as a result of bank holidays. Residents can find these collection days in the calendar delivered to every household last month, or they can check on the council’s website – www.bristol.gov.uk/recycling.

Extra waste

Don’t worry if you have a little extra waste that can’t be recycled after Christmas. The collection crews will take an additional black sack as side waste for the first two weeks in the New Year.

Additional recycling containers

If you often produce a high level of recycling and would like to have more recycling containers, you can order additional black boxes or brown food waste caddies and bins by calling the council’s customer service centre on 0117 922 2100.

The customer service centre will have more than twice the usual number of staff available to deal with any queries residents may have about their waste and recycling throughout the Christmas period.

For more information on waste and recycling this Christmas, visit www.bristol.gov.uk/recycling.

opening of junctions in St Pauls – details of work

October 3, 2011

We now know that works will begin on October 17th 2011.  The order in which the junctions will be worked on is as follows:

First: Drummond Road and Ashley Road
Second: Drummond Road and City Road
Third: Brighton Street and Argyle Road

We have been told that work on each junction will last approx. three weeks on each junction.  Please be aware that the dates are “weather permitting” and delays could occur in this schedule.

During the work there will be parking restrictions in place, which will impact on you and your neighbours.  The contractors are aware of the difficulties around parking in the area and will do their best to inform you of these restrictions.  Please keep an eye open for these signs, which will be placed in the area 7 days in advance of the works starting.

The pictures here will show you what your new junctions will look like.

If we hear of any further serious delays or changes we will make sure to let you know as soon as possible.  If you have any questions, concerns or comments please feel free to get in touch.

Free loft insulation for first 1,000 householders

September 26, 2011

Message from Bristol City Council:

As autumn draws in and the temperature drops, a new scheme that will enable hundreds of residents to cut their heating bills and keep warm gets under way.

Bristol City Council has joined forces with Npower, Wolseley and the Centre for Sustainable Energy to offer up to 1,000 householders across the city the chance to claim free loft insulation which will also be delivered to their home free.

The scheme, open to the first 1,000 people to call 0800 512 012, is funded through the Carbon Emission Reduction target by Npower and the council.

Dave Cowley from Bristol City Council, said: “We recognised that while people could buy DIY loft insulation, they would have to get the very bulky insulation home. This promotion solves that.

”The first 1,000 people to phone the free phone number with details of the existing depth of insulation in their home and the size of their loft will be able to put in an order and get it delivered for free.”

The scheme is open to everyone in Bristol who owns, or who rents a domestic property and who wishes to insulate the loft and who has not previously had funding to do so (commercial properties are excluded from this promotion).

Help to install the Rockwall insulation materials is available through the Bristol Energy Efficiency Scheme (BEES) under which you can get it installed for free if you’re over 60 – or if you’re not, you can get it done for as little as £179.

Five of the six major energy companies have recently increased their prices – having both loft and cavity wall insulation is the sensible option, and could save customers £255 on their bills on average, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

The 0800 512 012 telephone number is that of the Energy Saving Trust advice line which is staffed by trained energy advisors.
