This kind of action sets a dangerous precendent for state intervention in protest. It does little to curb the EDL who could just call a static demo instead, or turn up unannounced. It also suggests that you don’t believe the people of bristol would turn up in their 1000s to oppose the devisive nationalist & racist stuff the EDL come up with.
We’d like to add not everyone in the UAF supported the call for a ban at the time, and many that did have since learnt from their mistake. Its a shame others can’t do the same.
We Are Bristol have a petition and statement calling for a counter demonstration to the EDL. See: http://bristol.indymedia.org/article/708624 and http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/we-are-bristol-unite-to-stop-the-edl-marching/
It’s worth remembering that the state didn’t just ban the EDL from marching; http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/brendanoneill2/100102396/in-finding-itself-banned-unite-against-fascism-has-fallen-victim-to-its-own-brand-of-boneheaded-illiberalism/
